1. GENERAL ELIGIBILITY

1.1 Master's Degree of this University or any other qualification recognized as equivalent thereto in the fields of study notified from time to time by this University. Specific educational qualifications are given in Clause 2.

1.2 Bachelor's Degree in Engineering / Technology of the University or any other qualification recognized as equivalent thereto in the fields of study with a minimum of 15 years of R & D Experience in National Research Laboratories / Public sector undertakings and with minimum of three publications in referred impact factor journals or two approved international patents in the last five years.

1.3 A minimum of 55% marks or CGPA of 5.5 on a 10 point scale in the qualifying examination (In case of SC/ST/ Differently –Abled candidates, 50% marks or CGPA of 5.0 on a 10 point scale).

1.4 The Clause 1.3 does not apply, if the qualifying degree is M.S (By Research) of this University or recognized as equivalent.

Candidates should have the required qualification in the order of studies 10th, HSC, UG/PG degree or its equivalent qualification.
 
3. Ph.D. Programme
Candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria as in the Clauses 1 & 2 are eligible to apply for Ph.D. Programme. Final semester PG students are also eligible to apply(Subject to condition they have to fulfill the condition).
 
3.1 Full-Time Ph.D. Programme
3.1.1 Candidates under Full-time shall do research work in the University Departments/University Colleges/University Campuses/Affiliated Engineering Colleges/Architecture Schools and shall be available during the working hours for curricular, co-curricular and related activities.
3.1.2 Candidates working in the projects undertaken from State/Central/Quasi Government and totally funded through the projects in the University Departments, University Colleges of Engineering, University Campuses, Govt./Govt. Aided/Self financing Engineering Colleges within Tamil Nadu. If the Principal Co-ordinator/Investigator of such projects are recognized Supervisor of Anna University, Chennai and working in the University Departments/Affiliated Engineering College, the candidate shall register for research programme under such Supervisor only. The candidate should be appointed in a project sanctioned by a funding agency/organization atleast for a period of two years. Part employments in different spells or in different projects are not permitted. The Department / Centre where the project is undertaken shall be a recognized research centre of the University.

3.1.3 Candidates in employment, who want to pursue Full-time study, shall be sponsored by their employer and shall avail study leave for the minimum duration of the programme and shall produce relieving order obtained from their employer to join the research programme.

3.1.4 Candidates who are sponsored by AICTE under Quality Improvement Programme for teachers of Engineering Colleges who satisfy the eligibility conditions shall be eligible for Full-time category only in the specializations as notified in the AICTE guidelines.

3.1.5 Candidates who are selected at National level Fellowship programmes or by any recognized bodies and who satisfy the eligibility conditions as per the regulations shall also apply under Full-time category in the respective specialization.

3.1.6 Foreign Nationals sponsored by Government of India on any exchange programme who satisfy the eligibility conditions as per the regulations shall apply for Full-time study.
 
3.2 Part-Time Ph.D. Programme
The following categories of candidates are eligible to apply under Part-time programme.

3.2.1 Full-time teachers of University Departments / University Colleges / Colleges affiliated to the University and Government /Government aided/Self-financing Polytechnic Colleges within Tamil Nadu.

3.2.2 Candidates working in R&D Centres which are recognized as a research centre by this University to do collaborative research work and sponsored by the respective employer.
 
4. Mode of selection
4.1 The applications having the consent of recognized supervisor from recognized department of Anna University, Chennai are only considered for admission to Ph.D./M.S. (By Research) programmes. Other applications shall be summarily rejected without any notice. The preliminary scrutiny will be done by the Centre for Research and short list the eligible candidates as per norms. The short listed candidates shall be called for written test (to be conducted in the Anna University Main Campus, Chennai only) by the Director, Entrance Examination followed by inteview. Syllabus (Click Here for Ph.D. Syllabus and there code) for the written test for various specializations is given in website and candidates are advised to select any one of the syllabus for written test. The change of syllabus will not be entertained in future. The selection shall be based on the performance of the candidate in written test, Interview and the marks scored in the PG qualifying degree.

4.2 A minimum cumulative mark of 50% is fixed for selection based on the performance in the Entrance test, Qualifying exam and Interview and the successful candidates shall be short listed.

4.3 Candidates who have UGC, UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/teacher fellowship holder are exempted from written test and interview.

Candidates whose M.Phil. degree related to the proposed Ph.D. field of research, the minimum duration of the programme shall be reduced by one year (i.e) for Full-time 2 years and for Part-time 3 years.
 
6. Faculty for the award of the degree

The Ph.D. degree shall be awarded in the Faculty shown in Annexure I based on the Post Graduate degree of the candidate.

 
7. Details of fees to be paid
7.1 Registration Fee

Application registration fee of Rs.800/- for General Category and Rs.400/- for Tamil Nadu SC/ST/SCA candidates.

The mode of fee payment is through online only.
* Tuition fee is exempted for differently abled persons and Full-time Tamil Nadu state SC/ST candidates. Smart/Identity card fee as notified by the University is to be paid at the time of admission.
Note: 50% of fee concession is applicable to the regular Faculty members of University Departments / Regional Centres / University Engineering Colleges / Government Colleges and Government Polytechnic Colleges till the maximum duration of the programme.
 
7.3 Semester Fee
As shown in 7.2 (III) above, each semester fee is to be paid as notified in the website of the University till the submission of Thesis.
 
7.4 Examination fee for Course Works
A minimum of four PG level courses are to be studied and examinations are to be undertaken by a Ph.D. scholar as recommended by the Doctoral Committee. The prescribed Examination fee has to be paid as notified by the Controller of Examinations.

7.5 Synopsis Fee

Rs. 6,500/- (including Provisional Certificate and Degree Certificate fee) shall be paid at the time of submission of Synopsis.

 
8. Documents to be enclosed with the application
8.1 Duly attested photocopies of certificates for proof of qualification (Xth std or equivalent, HSC or equivalence UG/PG mark sheets & Degree certificates), Community certificate, Transfer certificate and Service certificate (if any).
Note: Full-time SC/ST candidates should produce original community certificate at the time of admission for claiming Tution fee exemption.
8.2 Candidates who have obtained PG degree under Full-Time Regular mode of State/Central Universities only shall be considered as eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme. Others have to apply for Course Equivalence to the Director (Academic Courses), Anna University (Click Here for Cousre Equivalency Application Form ) . Photocopies of curriculum, syllabi of the courses undertaken, mark sheets, certificate from the institution regarding mode of the programme, conduct of classes, evaluation pattern along with prescribed fee shall be enclosed while applying for Course equivalence to the Director (Academic Courses).

8.3 Photocopy of appointment order (If any).

8.4 A brief one page write up on the Research topic chosen and duly signed by the Supervisor, Joint Supervisor (if any) and the candidate. The title of research topic and title mentioned in the online Application form shall be the same.

8.5 Two self-addressed covers stamped to the value of Rs.5/-(Rupees Five only) each.
 
9 Submission of application

9.1 Consent from a recognized supervisor from a recognized department of this University is mandatory to consider the application for admission to Ph.D. / M.S. (By Research) programmes.

9.2 Filled in application with all enclosures securely stitched to it shall be sent to The Director, Centre for Research, Anna University, Chennai - 600 025 so as to reach on or before 31.08.2017 by 05.30 p.m. Online fee Receipt shall be enclosed along with the completed application.

10. HOSTEL ACCOMODATION IS NOT AVAILABLE.
 
11. ATTENTION TO THE CANDIDATES AND SUPERVISORS
11.1. Candidates working in University Departments, University Campuses, University Colleges of Engineering and Affiliated Engineering Colleges situated within Tamil Nadu shall apply under Part-time mode.
11.2. Recognized supervisors who are working in

i. University Departments/University Colleges/University Campuses/Govt./Govt. aided Engineering Colleges (as given in Click here).

ii. Recognized research departments of Self-financing Engineering College (as given in Click here) shall only function as Supervisor.
11.3. Recognized supervisors working in R&D centres (as given in Click here) and in the non recognized departments of self-financing Engineering Colleges shall act only as Joint supervisor.
11.4. Supervisors working in recognized Nationalized Laboratories situated within Tamil Nadu shall also function as Supervisor. However, for such Supervisors, a recognized supervisor from University Departments or from affiliated Engineering Colleges as Joint Supervisor is mandatory.

11.6. Details of the Supervisors should be provided through the Supervisor Login only.
11.7. As per regulations 2016 the maximum no. of scholars[Ph.D./M.S. (By Research) put together] permissible for guidance under a Supervisor/Joint Supervisor at any given point in time is restricted based on the designation of the Supervisor/Joint Supervisor, which is given as follows.

11.8. A MAXIMUM OF 4 CANDIDATES SHALL ONLY BE ALLOWED TO REGISTER WITH A SUPERVISOR IN ANY ONE SESSION.
11.9.The scholars will be governed by the Ph.D./M.S.(By Research) Regulations (R 2016) of this University.
11.10. The written test and interview will be held in the University main Campus at Chennai only.
11.11. The panel of Six experts with Ph.D. Qualification in the field of proposed research area, of which three members shall be the faculty members of the University/Colleges affiliated to this University, and other three members shall be Faculty from other Universities / Experts of R&D Departments of National Laboratories preferably from within the State of Tamil Nadu.
11.12. For interdisciplinary research that requires more than one expert, the Joint Supervisor shall be approved by the Director (Research) based on the request of the Supervisor and the recommendation of the Head of the Department of the Supervisor (Refer Regulations(R 2016) clause 7.5).
 
IMPORTANT NOTE:
- Application submitted without the consent of the recognized supervisor from recognized department of this university shall be summarily rejected and no further correspondence will be entertained.
- Incomplete application with regard to the documents mentioned under clause 8.0 will not be considered and will be summarily rejected.
- The application submitted with the consent of the recognized supervisor who is already guiding the maximum number of Ph.D./M.S. (By Research) scholars as prescribed by this university will be summarily rejected and no correspondence will be made. 
- Candidates seeking admission under Part-time mode from the Organizations/Industries which are not recognized as research centres of this university will be rejected and no further correspondence will be entertained.
- Candidates who have not obtained PG degree under Full-Time Regular mode of State/Central Universities only shall be considered as eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme only after the issue of course equivalence certificate by “The director (Academic Courses)”, Anna University.
- Application fee or excess fees paid if any, will not be refunded under any circumstances.
 
- Making any corrections/striking off/overwriting manually, on the automatically generated data in pdf printout, will lead to rejection of application.
 
- Application received after the due date will not be considered.
 
- Application received without the online fee receipt and other documents will not be considered.
